Documentary Poster
I chose this image for the poster because I thought it strongly explained the motto or slogan of ‘100 Black Men’. Their slogan is ‘what they see is what they will be’. What they are seeing in this program are professional black men who are doctors and business owners, college graduates, etc. through the mentoring 100 Black Men, they also could become those men in the future. I thought a black man putting on a tie was very appropriate for our documentary subject and meaning.
I plan to edit this realist documentary in a simply way. I really want the topic being discussed to shine through without too many added effects, I think the subject is powerful enough. In the beginning, I want to edit in the mentors of 100 Black Men explaining what this program is and how it benefits and affects our community. I then want to switch the editing to focus primarily on the children, how this program helps them, how they have been successful and what their plans and dreams are for the future.
I plan to use mostly direct cuts. There is a possibility that we will have access to old photos or sections of interviews about the past and beginning of 100 Black Men, and in that case I might want to use some kind of dissolve or fade transitions to show we are talking about past events or memories.
I do want to use a title page, and credit pages at the end to credit ourselves, our interviewees, possibly how one can donate to 100 Black Men, or links on how to get involved or join the organization? I also want to have a title page near the beginning with the slogan ‘what they see is what they will be’.

“Oh my gosh! Your baby is so cute, I could just gobble him up!” (Laughter) “Just kidding, I’m not hungry.”
“Last year some punks smashed our pumpkins in the street. I’m just buying fake ones this year.”
“No man, the doctor said her leg is broken. She can’t play for almost 2 months. That’s gonna kill our season.”
“Every time I go there they mess up my coffee. For real. I don’t go there anymore, that Starbucks is dead to me.”
“Why are you smiling like that? It’s creepy”
Premise - Two friends, Mary and Martha, are shopping for Halloween decorations in the seasonal section of a department store. They are walking up and down a few aisles of the store, browsing the merchandise for sale this year and discussing how to make their decorations this year better than last year’s.
Mary – “Look at these door covers. Do you plan on decorating again this year?”
Martha – “I have to. Logan gets so excited about Halloween, there’s no way he’ll let me skip it!”
Mary – “What’s he gonna be this year?”
Martha – “He keeps saying he wants to be Captain America, he’s on this super hero kick.”
Mary – “I think they have those costumes here in the next aisle.”
Martha – “Yeah, I only need the outfit for his body. He has the mask and shield already. My mom bought them for his birthday. Is Hannah going to be a bumble bee again this year?”
Mary – “Probably. She’s too young to know the difference. And those antennas are so cute on her!” (Makes an irritated noise, Beat change.) “They are all out of those light up jack-o-lantern candles! That’s the whole reason I came to this store!”
Martha – “Ask that guy.” (Both women look at the sales person at the end of the aisle, then look back at each other.)
Mary – “That’s okay. I have to come back later this week anyways.”

Mary – “Your family won’t carve any?”
Martha – “Nah, Logan thinks scraping out the guts is slimy and gross. And Jerry isn’t very creative with his jack-o-lantern faces.”
Mary – (Laughs at Marth’s response to her question) “Well, I have to kick it up a notch this year. My neighbors put our decorations to shame last Halloween.”
Martha – “I just dug out all my decorations from the basement. I could probably give you a few things.”
Mary – “Aw, thanks! That would be great actually. I can’t spend too much money this year. Our new car payment has made things pretty tight.”
Martha – “Yeah, we’ve been there too." (Beat change.) "Ready to check out?”
Mary – “Yes, I can’t be late for my appointment at 3:00.”
Martha – “I’ve already spent too much, let’s go.”
(Both women leave the seasonal section and walk towards the checkout lanes.)

Documentary Subject
Interviewee: Heather C., RN, Stay at Home Mother, Homeschool Teacher
This interview could prove to be particularly useful in a documentary about education and homeschooling. Heather has over 10 years of homeschooling experience, after sending her children to both public and private schools that did not meet her expectations and meet the specific educational needs of her children. This is a very hot topic among teachers, educators and parents, posing many questions about the accountability of parents and children, meeting state and local education requirements and the differences in homeschool curriculums. People also debate on whether or not homeschooled children receive the necessary social opportunities and lessons that typical mainstream children experience. The testimony that a subject like Heather could provide in this field has the possibility to provide personal insight and advice, along with sharing the first hand successes and downfalls that homeschooling can bring.
Heather C. is a married, stay at home mother and teacher to three children, one whom is still homeschooled (duel enrolled in both high school and college), and two who are enrolled in mainstream schooling at private catholic academies. Her eldest daughter started homeschooling in the 4th grade, continuing through high school and is now 16 years old, finishing her senior year of high school while simultaneously finishing her sophomore year of college. Her middle son started homeschooling in the 2nd grade. It was extremely beneficial for him because he suffers from ADHD and a mild speech disorder. He reentered a private catholic academy in the 8th grade and has been successful since. Her youngest son did not receive any homeschooling thus far, and has attended a catholic academy for preschool and kindergarten. Aside from mothering and teaching, Heather also earned her BS in Nursing.

Music Video Pre Production Proposal

Music: ‘Screaming’ By: Crestfallen
Tagline: Self-sacrifice is not so nice.
Band: Crestfallen is a local band consisting of singer and songwriter Brady Small, an IUSB student, and his musical partner, Matt Lederer. They mostly create electronic music compositions and productions.
Song: The song we chose from Crestfallen is a demo of theirs, an unreleased song called ‘Screaming’. The lyrics of the song describe someone who is having an internal conflict with themselves because they are portraying themselves to be one person on the outside, but they are really a different person on the inside.
Short Synopsis: In our video, we will have a man as the main character who is having an identity crisis, he will struggle to find his true self throughout the video. He will wake up in his apartment and get ready for his day. He will exit his apartment and walk down the street, bumping into someone and having a brief confrontation. His personality will be rough and disgruntled. He will receive a text telling him about a party going on that night. He seems irritated, but goes to the party anyways. At the party, it will be clear he is not having a good time, he will seem ‘too good’ for this sort of thing. He will leave the party, go home and go to sleep. During the night, he will have a dream that reveals to him the girl that he likes and the real person he wants to be. The next morning, he awakes with a new attitude and outlook on life and being his true self, will be able to be with the girl he likes.
Target Audience: Our target audience is primarily late teens to young adults who we assume would most enjoy this type of song and genre of music, but it could be enjoyed by listeners of all ages, as it does not contain explicit content.
Resources: We have secured a few friends who will serve as actors. Waltter has offered his apartment for a shooting location, and also we will use downtown Mishawaka as a shooting location. Waltter has a Nikon camera we will be shooting with, and I (Jenna) have a tripod available. Any sound or lighting equipment we might need we will have to rely on the class equipment.

The emotion I chose to showcase is the most common, yet the most wonderful of emotions, and that is happiness! I was in a wedding over the weekend, so it was the perfect opportunity to take some candid photos of people and things in a very happy environment.
Dancing makes everyone happy!
People who don't dance, laugh at people who do dance, and that makes them happy too!
Flowers... they make just about every girl happy.
Everyone... EVERYONE is happy when they are given presents!!
A hug shared between friends... happiness.
A special dance between mother and daughter... happiness.
The simple things in life... they are different for each person, but always bring a smile to their faces!
One of those simple things in life is coffee... mmmmmmm... coffee = happiness.

The music video that I chose for my analysis is Heart Attack by Demi Lovato. This video is mainly performance based, it does not tell any kind of story, but rather shows a combination of shots of Demi Lovato singing and her band performing throughout to video.
The main visual elements that I feel are used in this video are color, line and light. This entire video was made on a white and black color palette. The color element switches back and forth, from being very light and bright in the background, to being very dark. The contrast in the light scenes are the darkness of Lovato’s hands, and the contrast in the dark scenes are the lights around the band. Lines are used a lot as well, such as during the light/white scenes where there are horizontal lines behind Lovato as she sings, and during the wide shots with dark background there are vertical pillars that continuously recede into the background, creating vertical and diagonal lines. About a minute into the video, during the chorus, there is also some shots of what appears to be paint running down the wall in vertical stripes. Just the opposite of the paint running, about 1:30 into the video, it shows Lovato singing in front of a black wall, and to the sides of her are white, horizontal stripes. The contrast in light and dark also plays an important role in the production of this video. In the scenes of lightness, the background and Lovato’s clothes are completely white and bright, but as the video plays on, it becomes tainted by the dark paint running on the walls the black paint on her hands. In the scenes of darkness, there are many lights in the space the band is performing in and the lights turn on and off and flash vibrantly with the rhythms of the song.
There are times when the camera does appear to move, some shots are close ups of her, either from the waist up or from the shoulders up, and some shots are wide angle shots that show her entire body, as well as the entire band and the space that they are playing in. This video is mostly interpretive, it does not follow a story line or narrative, but rather shows elements to invoke emotions involved in the song lyrics, and the movements and facial expressions Demi Lovato shows also show a lot of emotion and tension.

I had my husband take this picture while I prepared our dinner on Thursday night. This picture shows just one of the things that I love to do, and that is cooking and baking! It is one of the ways I show my love to my family and express some of my creativity. I also love spending time with my husband, Billy and our chocolate lab, Abraham. Over the summer I started taking a serious interest in practicing yoga, so that is also another hobby of mine.
My husband and I have a shared love for the Chicago Cubs (Go Cubs Go!), so we both watch baseball games and/or new stories and statistics just about every day this summer.
When I graduate, I hope to work more towards the marketing, advertising and branding areas of the graphic design world. It is my hope that I can work on a limited basis, or part time, because my ultimate goal is to start a family, which will then become my number one priority.
